10 Days ’til Godspell: Tech rehearsals begin. Wanna join me?

You know what I love about the beginning of tech?

Everyone working on the show is finally all in the same room at the same time. No more conference calls and group emails. You want to talk to someone? Odds are they’re just a few rows away from you.

The other thing I love? Well, that’s pretty obvious. The pieces of the puzzle are finally coming together. Corners first, then the outside borders, and then we finally fill in the middle.

Today, we started at the top of the show, with actors (no band yet – that’s coming, so stay tuned), and stepped through moment by moment, working lighting, traffic patterns, where props go (and where the come from), etc. We accomplished our goal of getting exactly where we wanted to in the script (after “Save The People”) and we’ll pick it up here tomorrow.

I’ve posted a photo below so you can see the vantage point from my desk in the theater (and yep, that is Hunter holding that stage on his own). I actually wish you could all sit with me and watch the process, because it’s pretty cool. But of course that’s impossible.

Hmmm.

It is impossible for all of you to sit with me and watch the process. But it isn’t impossible for one of you to sit with me and watch the process . . .

So . . . ok, just thought of this, haven’t cleared it with anyone, but the heck with it . . . here goes . . .

I’m going to pick one of you to sit with me at my tech desk for one hour this weekend. You’ll watch tech with me, see what I do, and what the actors, designers and director do, as we continue our journey towards our first preview. (You’ll also observe first hand my tech ritual of taking a trip to Famous Amadeus on 8th Ave for a slice and a Coke).

You in? It’ll be fun, and you’l be one of the first people to get a glimpse of our Godspell. Oh, and you’ll also get a free slice of pizza on me.

How do you enter?

I’m going to pick the winner randomly from one of the email subscribers to this blog. So if you’re already signed up via email, then you are already entered. If you haven’t signed up, then put your email in the box in the upper right hand corner of this blog, and you’re in. Simple.

I’ll announce the winner on Friday!

And the winner and I will hang out this weekend at Circle in the Square, and you’ll be able to see everything that goes into getting the show ready for the public in . . . 10 days.

  1. I know I can’t influence the drawing, but if I could: pick me and I’ll return the favor! you can come to an orchestra rehearsal for Transport Group’s production of Michael John LaChiusa’s new “Queen of the Mist”, rehearsing at Carroll’s this weekend!

I would love to come to New York and see what ALL of you are doing. I am so excited because I will be there in….16 days!

  3. Mary Ann O'Rourke says:

O…M…Godspell!!! Winning the lottery would be nothing compared to this! :-) I got to meet Edgar Lansbury at the Shareholder’s meeting, and am still on a high from that…thanks for giving me something new to daydream about! :-)

I think this contest you are having is great. But I also wanted to thank you for keeping such an interesting and intimate blog. It has really given us an “inside” feeling to the whole creating process. I am so excited for Godspell. Thanks!

As a college student currently taking production classes this would be a amazing experience, I am crossing my fingers super hard! :)

  8. Joseph Brincat says:

    That would be awesome!!!!

  9. Emily Parrish says:

Oh my goodness, this is the one weekend I will be in New York City. I am so upset that I will be leaving right before previews begin because I have been dying to see this show. This would literally mean the world to me. It sounds so cheesy, I know, but I just love this show so much!

  10. Maya says:

I’ll actually be in the city this weekend for my birthday. This sounds like an amazing experience for whoever wins. I can’t wait to see the show when it opens!

  11. Kerry says:

If I win, I would love to have my son sit in – he is a Dance major at The Hartt School and as Godspell is his favorite show (passed down from MY love of it!), this would mean everything to him! I’ll sit outside with a coffee and a smile on my face knowing he’s cherishing every second.

  12. Alexendra DeWitt says:

Pick me, pick me. I looooove tech rehearsals.

  13. Scott says:

Confused. This blog says no need to “enter”. Today’s blog says click here to enter. I would greatly enjoy this experience, so I’m writing here just in case one needs to “enter”.

Either way, I’m seeing Godspell in just a few days by days…

  14. Stephanie says:

I’ll be stage managing my own tech hell on Sunday — but would LOVE to see someone else’s version of a tech rehearsal! I’ve been so impressed with the way this whole pre-production process and blogging has happened. I feel so personally invested in this production even though I haven’t lifted a finger (though my husband and I are “People of Godspell”). Looking forward to seeing the final preview… Can’t believe it’s almost here.

It would be my lifelong dream — after 30 long years of wishing and hoping for Godspell to come back to Broadway – -to win the chance to sit with you at a tech rehearsal. My mother and I shared our love for Godspell and before she died, she told me that she wanted more than anything to see the show back on Broadway. If I win this opportunity to see the tech rehearsal, it would be a dream come true, for her, and for me. . . .(Plus a great chance to do the interview for the story I hope to write and get some incredible insight as to the creative process involved in staging a show!!)

I’m crossing my fingers and toes and anything else – -I would consider it a highlight of my life if I win!!!

      Thank you so much!
      Lisa

  15. Jules says:

I live in Mpls, so if I win, I will ‘donate’ my tech hour and free slice to a deserving theatre student or theatre person that lives near the Great White Way!

  16. David Urbieta says:

    Pick me!!!!!!!

  17. Matt Harvey says:

Hey Ken! I wanted to say thank you so much for all of your daily inspiration. I’m currently in production @ NYMF with Blood [By The Mummers] and it’s been an absolute pleasure to check in with your blog daily. My roommate Jake, and I (he’s also a mummer) compare notes on it all the time. Since we do very nearly every aspect of production within the group, it’s been an incredible resource for us to have at our finger tips. So, thank you my friend (because you are a friend and boon to all who pursue this), for providing us such incites with both passion, and joy. May things stay better than well. I can’t wait to come check out Godspell. Thank you.
    -Matt Harvey

  18. I would love to sneak a peak at a tech rehearsal. It happens that I can come out this weekend: they are letting me( just a mommy joke there) so it would be a fortuitous situation to be picked. :)

  19. n keyes says:

Julie Keyes is very deserving. She auditioned and would love to meet Ken in person.

  20. sjthespian says:

I *so* wish I could do this, but I’m on the left coast. I’ve spent lots of time behind the tech table in community theatre, but never or a professional show.
